Workshops for Adults

Fee: $270
Includes access to MECCA's best junque
Instructor: Michael deMeng
MECCA is happy to announce that Michael deMeng, the Reverend of Rust, Devotee of Detritus and Aficionado of Found Objects,
will be teaching a two-day assemblage workshop at MECCA.
Here is Michael's description of the workshop: "I've always liked the idea of a place where secrets are kept. Of course most people think of Pandora and her box (which, as an
aside was actually a large jar in the original story... I think I prefer to think of it as a small box for some reason), or there is Alice going down the rabbit hole.
In both cases the there is potential danger inside those sacred places, but also potential enlightenment. Well this is the idea that lurks behind this workshop.
This is a two day class where students will create a small realm to preserve sacred things, but that's not all, students will also create a small little metaphoric
representation of what they want to lock away or keep safe. To do this we will explore a variety of assemblage, collage and painting techniques to create these magical
little worlds. Are you locking away a secret or keeping something sacred safe? The choice is yours, and don't worry...your secret is safe with me."
To learn more about Michael and his inspiring creations, visit www.michaeldemeng.com or his blog.
Tuesdays, August 10-31, 6:00-9:00pm In this hands on jewelry workshop each student will create a beaded necklace with one to three wrapped stones (each suspended by one chain link) and a hand-made clasp.
Students will learn basic wire working techniques using appropriate tools. MECCA will provide all tools and materials, although students are encouraged to bring their own special stones for wrapping.
Saturday, July 31, 11:00-3:00pm Learn basic weaving techniques with materials found at Mecca. You will learn plaiting and twining by making two small baskets. We will start one basket with flat reed, but then we will forage through the wealth of available resources: fabric, strings, roving, bias tapes, yarns, paper, plastic tape and more.
The second basket will be a diagonally plaited pouch made from posters, calendars, or other heavy papers. Don't forget embellishments of pine cones, beads, buttons, jewelry, and who knows what else we'll find? It's guaranteed that no two baskets will be alike!
